Empowering Learners Through Innovation: A Foundation Success Story
How the Skills and Education Group Foundation is Transforming the Student Experience at Tresham College
Our mission for the Skills and Education Group Foundation is to provide the funding and support necessary to break down barriers to learning. Today, we are proud to spotlight the impact of our 2023/24 grant awarded to Tresham College (Wellingborough).
When Tresham College applied for a Foundation grant, they identified a critical challenge: a decline in “Physical Literacy” among post-16 learners and a need for inclusive, outdoor spaces that support both mental and physical resilience.
A Project Driven by Student Voice
What made this application stand out to us was its origin: the students themselves, the application was a response to genuine learner demand.
This project is a fantastic example of student voice in action, our students asked for this equipment after experiencing callisthenics sessions, and we listened. The rig gives them a healthy, constructive way to use their time, build resilience and develop confidence. We know from previous feedback that activities like this have a direct positive impact on mental health and wellbeing.
Investing in Physical Literacy
The Foundation provided the funding towards a state-of-the-art outdoor callisthenics rig, a versatile training hub designed to move beyond traditional sports. The impact has been multifaceted:
-
Bridging the Skills Gap: For Public Services students, the rig provides a professional-standard environment to prepare for the rigorous physical entrance tests required for careers in the blue-light services and armed forces.
-
The “Green Gym” Effect: By funding an outdoor facility, the Foundation has supported the college’s mental health strategy, providing a space for “active recovery” and stress reduction.
-
Inclusivity in Action: Unlike traditional gyms, callisthenics relies on bodyweight exercises, making it accessible to students of all fitness levels and backgrounds.
A Message from our Foundation
