A Journey Beyond the Classroom: Boston College ESOL Learners Visit London
Boston College, in Lincolnshire, is a further education college dedicated to helping learners develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed for future success. It offers a broad range of academic and vocational programmes, the college combines high-quality teaching with strong industry partnerships and modern learning facilities.
With a commitment to inclusion, opportunity and lifelong learning, Boston College supports students from diverse backgrounds to achieve their goals and make a positive contribution to their communities.
The Project:
Boston college applied to the Foundation for a grant to help provide coach transport for a day trip to London for 32 English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) learners and accompanying staff, enabling access to cultural and educational experiences that many participants would otherwise be unable to access.
The visit included key historical and cultural landmarks that supported learners’ studies while helping them gain a deeper understanding of British history, heritage and society. By experiencing these sites first-hand, learners were able to bring classroom topics to life and develop a greater appreciation of the historical events, institutions and cultural influences that have shaped modern Britain.
In addition, learners strengthened their language skills through real-world learning opportunities and applying their skills in an authentic setting that engaged learning beyond the classroom.
Through exploring these sites and participating in a shared learning experience, learners were able to build their confidence, develop social skills and strengthen their sense of belonging. For many participants, the trip provided a rare opportunity to visit the capital and experience landmarks they had previously only seen in books, lessons or on television.
Navigating a busy city, managing their time, following schedules and interacting in unfamiliar environments helped learners develop important life and employability skills, like communication, independence, problem-solving and adaptability.
The experience also broadened horizons and raised aspirations, encouraging learners to see themselves as active participants in society and inspiring them to consider future educational, training and career opportunities that may previously have felt beyond their reach.
